May 5th, 2009 Update

gypsyHi Everyone!

First and foremost, we would like to thank all the volunteers and participants in Gypsy’s auction! You are all fantastic!

Gypsy came home Sunday, April 26 and has been doing very well. We are so pleased with her recovery thus far. Her incision is healing very nicely and as far as we can tell the swelling from inflammation is gone! She has been off the amikacin injections for over a week now. Amikacin was used to treat the MRSI staph infection she contracted, probably during her surgery, and we are very happy to report that her skin is still laying flat on her neck so there is no indication of infection.

More and more she is behaving like her usual self - including her Eskie attitude! I sometimes find her keeping vigil at one of the front windows… just daring anything to come into “her” yard. She eats like a horse and we take several short walks a day working up to our typical walk. She also enjoys just relaxing outside in the nice weather we’ve been having. dscf0598

Gypsy has a follow-up appointment on May 11th with Internal Medicine for her
ITP diagnosis at which time they will check her platelet count. We will update everyone with the Dr’s report.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support!

Sincerely,
Charissa, Kirk and Gypsy

April 14, 2009

Hi, my name is Gypsy. I’m a standard American Eskimo dog. Thank you so much for visiting my medical fundraising auction. I was recently diagnosed with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). It’s an autoimmune disease where my immune system destroys my blood platelets. Low platelets cause spontaneous internal bleeding.Gypsy

It all started when suddenly, overnight, I developed a mass under my jaw. I was taken immediately to my vets and they did a biopsy. The biopsy caused a huge hematoma on my neck. My Dr’s said I should go to the Cornell Companion Animal Hospital right away. I spent 8 days at the hospital in their INC (Intensive Nursing Care) unit and after many, many tests I was diagnosed with ITP. I could not go home because my platelets were so low that even a sneeze could cause internal bleeding. They couldn’t do anything about the initial mass in my neck until the hematoma dissipated. After almost a week on medications my platelets finally went up and the hematoma was going away so I got to go home but on the third morning home my neck started swelling up again. So back I went to Cornell. They said the new swelling was the initial mass getting bigger and that it needed to come out. After more tests, I had surgery the next day. They removed a cystic mass that was 4” long x 2” high x 2” deep and it had a ‘track’ that went up the right side of my face. They don’t know yet what it was but thankfully they do not think its cancer. They are not sure if that is what caused the ITP.

I was a very good girl at the hospital. Everyone said that I was the nicest Eskie they had ever met! They even wrote on my first discharge papers that I “…was an angel during my stay…”. I have lots of new friends here at Cornell and they are all really, really great but I can’t wait to get home and back with my family.

Love,
Gypsy

A few of Gypsy’s friends set up this auction to help pay for the expensive vet bills. All proceeds will be applied to Gypsy’s vet bill. Thank you, Steve, Elise, Soraya, and Leslie for setting up running this auction site! And thank you Casper for being such an inspiration.
